I can still remember seeing him on the screen for the first time in the summer of 1979, the first crew-member to bite the dust in Alien.

He was Quentin Crisp. He was Caligula in I, Claudius. He was Winston Smith. He was the goddamn Elephant Man! Not to mention Professor Broom and the War Doctor. And a hundred other inferesting roles. He played both Raskolnikov and Porfiry Petrovich, for instance. But we go and make William Hurt a bigger star.

Isn't that just the "character actor" versus "leading man" thing?

I first saw him when I, Claudius was initially shown in the USA. Excellent actor, never seen him in anything lousy. (I'm sure there must be a few. Wasn't there some mystery/comedy many years ago where he was the gay cop working with the straight cop? That doesn't sound too good.)

EDIT: This thing:

Lousy poster that makes it look like a million other cop comedies. For all I know, it may be an excellent film. But I doubt it. Looks like the "funny" version of Cruising, and the poster promotes the typical stereotypes of the effeminate gay man.

As has already been noted, with Alien and The Naked Civil Servant and 1984 and The Elephant Man on his resume, he leaves a fine legacy.

To my mind, in The Deathly Hallows, Part 2, John Hurt's brief cameo and Warwick Davis' extended role as the goblin and Professor Flitwick were the only worthwhile things about that movie.

He will always be the voice of Fiver in Watership Down.

This one surprised me as I had just seen him in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

There's a sequel to The Naked Civil Servant where he reprised the role 34 years later: "An Englishman In New York".
