In 1979, Katsuhiro Otomo (Steamboy, Akira) wrote a story called "A Space Godzilla," a proposed idea for a Godzilla film while the series was on hiatus. It was ultimately rejected, but Toho allowed it to be published in the magazine Starlog. The premise is an interesting one, to be sure:

A dead Godzilla, complete with its organs spilling out of a wound in its body, washes up ashore on a Japanese beach. It is discovered the the monster is of alien origin, is a female, and is pregnant(!) The monster is transformed into a space ship(!!) and set back to Godzilla planet, where the offspring reunited with its father. There, they tangle with a race of space sphynxes (!!!) and a big-breasted monster who happens to be mother Godzilla's killer.
