It's a sad day when the people at 4chan are the only ones looking at the situation calmly.

My alma mater sent an email to the student body assuring them there will be safe spaces and counseling available for those terrified by the outcome of the election.

Well, if any of those people are brown or Muslim, they could possibly use a safe space around now. I'm sure some of it is just the "we get clicks for reporting race-motivated attacks and swastika graffiti so we're gonna do that" factor, but that's still a lot of race-motivated attacks and swastika graffiti to be reading about.

Several months ago a stray black cat showed up at our cat-friendly home. He remains pretty skittish, showing up to be fed but not coming inside. He will tolerate petting while being fed. When we are lucky, we can grab him and take him to the vet while he is distracted by food. That way we had him neutered, given vaccines, etc. Some time ago his right eye turned dark orange. When we could finally get to the vet, she told us it was an injury, and that there was a black object that might be cancerous, requiring removal of the eye. When we went to the veterinary opthalmic specialist, he discovered that the black object in his eye was actually a bb. The eye is blind and will still have to be removed. So much for allowing children to have these "toy" weapons.

I've Always wondered what's up with the pantywaists that are the generation after mine (or those that came at the tail-end of my generation) that throw hissy-fits every time a conservative/Republican person is invited to speak at their university and get so emotionally traumatized at the very idea of someone with opposing views giving a speech in their vicinity, instead of making the rational decision to not attend the speech and go about their lives like normal people.

I've noticed in the last decade or so that parenting has gotten far more sheltering and protective than it used to be. Come to think of it, it probably goes back further, but I wasn't paying attention. It might go back as far as the Satanic Panic of the eighties. It seems to cut across liberal and conservative lines.

Gee, and here I thought I owned the corner as the middle aged curmudgeon in our little neighborhood. You guys are making me look downright open-minded.

In the meantime, Vic, your story has really grayed my day. I have never been able to fathom why people derived such joy and thrills from deliberately harming something unable to defend itself.

Weird. Why?

Because we ran out of stuff, or we only gave it to kids, or because we had a huge line, or because we are somehow doing it wrong..... that kind of stuff.

Now, people are really mad that we are not going to surrender our own Holiday family time to bake a pie for their family time. I basically have stopped answering the phone since I got sick of people. If they are serious about a Holiday order they can come in and talk to me about it. I have a feeling these folks won;t be so rude to my smiling face.

I actually had some nit-wit pull the 'Do you know who I am?" line on me. My response to them was, "No, but do you know who I am?"

I think I am turning into the local soup nazi.

Ha. Some time ago we read a little book whose title I will bowdlerize as Anuses which was all about the philosophy of people who fit that description. The one defining line of such a person was "Do you know who I am?"

We've come to a point where fascism is now a thing again, and we have to do something about it. I'm making an attempt to remind people that Americans fight fascism -- it may not always be historically true, but it's the way we like to remember ourselves, so that's how I'm going to frame it. I think memes based on Captain America and Indiana Jones and other nostalgic heroes battling nazis should be useful in this effort. One such meme has started going around, and I will try to add more.

Also, everywhere you can post the synopsis of Upton Sinclair's "It Could Happen Here". Like so....

Quote:
In 1936 Senator Berzelius "Buzz" Windrip, a charismatic and power-hungry politician, wins the election as President of the United States on a populist platform, promising to restore the country to prosperity and greatness, and promising each citizen $5,000 a year. Portraying himself as a champion of traditional American values, Windrip easily defeats his opponents, Senator Walt Trowbridge and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Though having previously foreshadowed some authoritarian measures in order to reorganize the United States government, Windrip rapidly outlaws dissent, incarcerates political enemies in concentration camps, and trains and arms a paramilitary force called the Minute Men, who terrorize citizens and enforce the policies of Windrip and his "corporatist" regime. One of his first acts as president is to eliminate the influence of the United States Congress, which draws the ire of many citizens as well as the legislators themselves. The Minute Men respond to protests against Windrip's decisions harshly, attacking demonstrators with bayonets. In addition to these actions, Windrip's administration, known as the "Corpo" government, curtails women's and minority rights, and eliminates individual states by subdividing the country into administrative sectors. The government of these sectors is managed by "Corpo" authorities, usually prominent businessmen or Minute Men officers. Those accused of crimes against the government appear before kangaroo courts presided over by "military judges". Despite these dictatorial (and "quasi-draconian") measures, a majority of Americans approve of them, seeing them as necessary but painful steps to restore American power. Others, those less enthusiastic about the prospect of corporatism, reassure themselves that fascism cannot "happen here", hence the novel's title.

I read that book once. A lot of it was based on Mussolini, I think.

AND we're sliding towards another Cold War, only with North Korea instead of the USSR. You know, it's a funny thing. The name Jeff Davis has been popping up again and again in my movie viewing and reading lately, and I thought it was an odd coincidence set against the irresponsible, racist comments Count Trumpula was making throughout his campaign. I even called him, in one of my blogs, the most un-American candidate since Jeff Davis.

And now look where we are.

For my job as a wage slave, I have been working on a presentation for the CEO and VP. It is tomorrow afternoon. Meanwhile, this afternoon my peers still can't get me the definitive numbers we are supposed to use for the data portions. I have been working on V7, because the numbers we are basing it on have changed that many times in 3 weeks. They keep trying to massage them to tell a better story. What have you people been doing for the last 3 weeks when I showed you the initial draft?

How is it possible that I can go to the local Chain Stores and get basic food staples for less than I can get them from the National Distributors? I know these guys are getting the products from the same National Distributors. Therefore, the "economies of Scale" are so great that the Chains can get the prices below Main Streets cost? Unreal! I can only hope that the Chains are using these staples as loss leaders and are taking a hit on the profit for these items to draw people into their stores.

No wonder why Main Street is dying. There is no way Main Street can compete on price, and most people expect small, local businesses to be cheaper than the chains!

So I went to the file room to see if I had a car signed out for my only home visit today. I didn't, but the only car available had a notation on it so odd that I couldn't decide whether or not it was really free. A supervisor standing there looked over my shoulder and she couldn't decide what it meant, either. So I shrugged, got in my own car and drove 16.6 miles to the family's house. The mom came shuffling out looking like death warmed over, and told me that she cancelled because she has something contagious. EIGHT HOURS AGO, she says. There was no message in my voicemail, I said, and she told me someone answered the phone and told her they would tell me in person. And clearly forgot. Which is why we always use voicemail. So I drove the 16.6 miles back to the office. If this person had put mom in my voicemail, I would have saved the agency 32 miles and change in mileage reimbursement.

I am so fed up with this health savings acct I am ready to kill somebody with an axe. I have a $500 prescription waiting for me at one phramacy, a $300 one at another, and all they keep telling me is, gee, something's set up wrong; you should be able to use your HSA debit card; we're going to make it a priority to fix this. Well, I came back on the day they said it would be fixed and it now appears the last person I talked to asked to have it looked at NON-priority, which would be another 15 days. So this time, oh definitely, it's a priority, which means no sooner than Thursday. We promise. Yeah. so did the other person I talked to. Is there nothing else you can really do!? I said and they directed me to the bank -- this was just the debit card service, not the place where the money is actually held. So I called the bank and some mumbler who barely speaks English says "Can't you just pay out of pocket?" I explain for the umpteenth time that I really don't the almost $800 ready to hand, and they purred understandingly and said let me connect you to...and hung up on me. But she did say something about paying online. So I came to this terminal, logged on, and discovered that until I have an invoice in my hand I can't pay them online. How exactly am I supposed to get an invoice without paying for the prescription?
